Temperature Measurement and Calibration

Classroom-based

An NPL scientists examines a triple point cell.

Overview

This is a 3 day course that concentrates on those methods of temperature measurement that are of greatest technological and industrial importance, covering the range –200 °C to 3000 °C.

This classroom-based course includes lectures that cover the necessary background to the measurement of temperature and calibration of temperature-measuring instruments. Full course notes will be provided. However, the emphasis will be on practical aspects of temperature measurement, calibration and traceability, with a lot of time being spent in laboratories.

The third day is optional, but will provide opportunities for more in-depth training and ‘hands-on’ experience of some of the calibration techniques used in the NPL Temperature laboratory.

Learners will receive an NPL Certificate of Attendance.

Learning Outcomes

  • To understand measurement techniques; thermodynamic background and temperature scales; calibration techniques; and traceability and accreditation
  • Hands-on laboratory sessions covering fixed points, resistance thermometers, thermocouples, radiation thermometers and dry block calibrators
  • Optional third day providing in-depth, hands-on experience of some of the laboratory calibration techniques
