Measurement Explained

A measurement probe measuring a metal structure with circular holes.

Measurement surrounds us in a huge variety of contexts. In this course, we provide some background information on measurement and metrology (the science of measurement and its application). We then explore some of these contexts.

‘Measurement Explained’ was designed for people who are new to metrology, those who have an interest in introductory measurement principles, and learners who need an introduction to our e-learning platform. The course provides an understanding of some key concepts in measurement and prepares learners for future courses in more complex areas.

This course consists of the following modules:

  1. Measurement and Metrology
  2. Measurement Uncertainty
  3. Instrumentation and Sensors
  4. Dimensional Measurement
  5. Electrical Measurement (coming soon!)

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding the concepts of measurement and metrology
  • Being able to explain what the SI is and how it is maintained
  • Recognising key terminology related to measurement and metrology
  • Describing what measurement uncertainty is and how it can affect decision making
  • Being familiar with instruments and sensors used to perform measurements
  • Being able to explain the roles of dimensional measurement and coordinate measurement
  • Being familiar with methods for performing coordinate measurements
  • Understanding some elements of good practice in electrical metrology when measuring current, voltage and resistance
