Machine Learning for Metrology

Machine learning (ML) is a branch of artificial intelligence that is based on the idea that computers can learn patterns, rules or structure from data without being given specific instructions about the task they are performing. This course describes how machine learning can be applied to metrology applications and, conversely, how metrology principles could be applied to machine learning to ensure confidence in machine learning outputs (and why this is important).

This short video is a precursor to an extended course on machine learning that is currently under development. As such, your feedback would be invaluable to help steer us — you can provide this feedback using the form on the course homepage.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the basic terms relating to Machine Learning
  • Be able to recall the basic terms and principles of metrology
  • Comprehend how metrology principles can be applied to machine learning to ensure confidence in machine learning outputs, and understand why this is important
