Course description

This e-learning course explores the principles and equipment associated with portable 3D metrology. The course content is divided into five modules:

  • Module 1: Principles of portable 3D measurement examines how locations in 3D space can be expressed using co-ordinate systems, approaches to measuring those locations, and why it is important
  • Module 2: Measurement strategy planning outlines key aspects of good decision-making in the planning and carrying out of a measurement task
  • Module 3: Portable co-ordinate measuring systems introduces some of the measuring systems that are used in portable 3D measurement and gives good practice guidance for their use
  • Module 4: Measurement uncertainty, and gaining confidence in measurement explores the sources of uncertainty common to different measuring systems and examines methods that can be used to gain confidence in measurement results
  • Module 5: A checklist for co-ordinate measurement introduces the checklist that accompanies the course; this checklist is designed to support the use of portable co-ordinate measuring systems

Who is it for?

Learning outcomes

This course will equip learners to understand:

  • The benefits of portable 3D metrology
  • How co-ordinate systems locate points in space, and how portable co-ordinate measuring (PCM) devices achieve this
  • How idealised geometries are fitted to point data
  • How to develop a measurement strategy
  • The operational principles of a range of PCM devices
  • Sources of uncertainty common to a range of PCM devices, and sources of uncertainty particular to each
  • How to gain a sense of traceability through verification and other confidence-building techniques
  • How to bring the right behaviours and a questioning mindset to portable 3D measurement tasks
