Course description

This one-day e-learning course provides a structured approach to metrology to support fundamental climate data products from satellites. The course provides a step-by-step guide to considering the uncertainties and error correlation structures associated with satellite Earth observation data. The focus is on the level 1 products of passive radiometric sensors, though the core principles also apply to active sensors and to level 2 and higher-level products generated from a metrologically-rigorous level 1 product. The course consists of two modules:

  • Module 1 introduces the key principles of uncertainty analysis as they apply to satellite level 1 products
  • Module 2 builds on this to give a step-by-step guide for generating a fundamental climate data record

Who is it for?

All those involved in earth observation from satellites, including those making and using level 1 data records. This course is complementary to the ‘Uncertainty analysis for Earth observation’ course, which focusses more on the calibration of field instruments used for in situ validation of satellite data. If you wish to do both courses, then we recommend starting with ‘Uncertainty analysis for Earth observation’.
